Twice Across Florida

Michael E. Grussemeyer, Regional Brevet Administrator, South Central Florida for Randonneurs USA and The Florida Freewheelers, Inc. of Orlando are proud to present “The Double Cross 600”, a 375 mile bicycle ride twice across Florida in 40 hours or less. This self supported event is designed to attract randonneurs and ultra cyclists from all over the country. By it’s very own name, twice across Florida has never been attempted by any organization in the State of Florida. We invite you to take the challenge of “The Double Cross 600” and be one of the first to complete this premier event. This is two different routes and is in no way similar to other cross Florida events. You do not have to belong to any organization to participate. REGISTRATION: www.bike4one.com/brevets/. Contact Michael E. Grussemeyer:  Ph. 239-549-7459

The ride starts in Indian Harbour Beach, Florida on the East Coast near Melborne. It travels along the inland waterways north through Cocoa Beach, then northwest along the St. Johns National Wildlife Refuge past Ft. Christmas through Oviedo, Casselberry, and Altamonte Springs. It then pass near Wekiva Springs State Park and goes through Apopka on the Old Dixie Hwy around Lake Harris, up Sugarloaf Mountain and then south through Clermont, Fl. The next heading is west out of Clermont to Trilby through the San Antonio Hills and continue westward to Weeki Wachi Springs (Home of the Mermaids) The Best Western there will be one of our designated stopovers at 190 miles. From there the course heads northeast up the Suncoast Trail and Lake Lindsey Road to Bushnell, Fl. The Microtel Inn is our second designated stopover at mile 235. We continue southeast through Webster and Centerville around Lake Minneola and back through Clermont, Fl, and the Holiday Inn Express which is our third designated stopover at 280 miles. Cyclists continue east to the West Orange Trail and ride the entire length back through Apopka, Fl. and the Best Western Motel, our fourth designated stopover at mile 305. The last segment from here is a backtrack of the first part of the ride and the only duplicate route to the finish at Indian Harbour Beach, Fl.

This event is self supported, requires two headlights, two taillights, a reflective vest and ankle straps as a minimum for lighting. Of course all riders must wear helmets and comply with all cycling laws of the State of Florida. No personal Sag Vehicles are allowed on the course. All riders are required to carry Brevet Cards and have them signed with date and time at all controls. Individuals and teams may participate in this event. This is not a race, but a 375 mile endurance ride with 40 hours or less to complete. The faster riders will however have more time to stop and rest at any of the designated stopovers.
